Regarding your final paragraph:

… i am using the practice of watching the mind, and will continue to do so for as long as it appears useful. I have no doubts as to how useful it is to watch the mind like this. I believe some kind of mind watching technique should be taught to children, even it should be one of the first thing a child learns, show them that their mind will do things without them being aware of it and to improve this awareness leads to great things. We never teach anything like this in the west, to me this is a major travesty and we are letting down people by not sharing this insightful knowledge.

This is a very dangerous idea. Watching the mind simply encumbers it with a huge unnecessary burden which will prevent it from soaring or getting anywhere near the transcendental. Or even the dreamlike. These kinds of states, the most understandable to Westerners being daydreaming, are necessary for the mind to be free, for you to be yourself, to rise above the strictly logical and formulaic. We dream in sleep to free us of our own feeble logic, after all.

You remember I did TM for years before I became a Christian. TM is Hindu in origin and is actually designed to release the mind from the constraints of normal “logical” thinking. Nevertheless I had a dream shortly after inviting Christ in, in which I saw myself struggling to move about hindered by bricks tied to my feet. Later I felt the Holy Spirit urging me to pray to “repent your constant self-monitoring”.

It really is Jesus who sets us free, Indie!

how’s it going? sounds good. you bailed after 7 days… ahh well. did they let you juggle in there. i saw one vipassana retreat that has a juggling ban. my mind is speeding up again after the retreat i did in india. as soon as we started doing this project in pakistan it got so excited. i also favour the buddhism but the hindus are so lovable for the craziness and singing.

Hey Indy,

Fantastic to read your insights, reminding me of my own meditation practice. I haven’t been that driven, although for the first time in a week or so I spent some time meditating yesterday and it did me a lot of good. I’m tempted to go on a vapassana course in the uk at some point. I think i’m going to boom in august in portugal though first!

When will you be in the UK? I’d like to go for a beer.

I think Buddhism can be disingenuous when it comes across as being ‘not a religion’ when if completely is. There are rituals, hierarchies, pleas for money, dictatorships and authorities. It’s a lot like the catholic church from one perspective. On top of that, they have the same belief type axioms as in Christianity. Where Christianity believes that Jesus is god, that there is a god, and that salvation is possible through Jesus, Buddhism believes in the possibility of enlightenment, the law of karma, and reincarnation. If you took any of these beliefs away, then spending 16 years in a cave would just be stupid.

No doubt though that all religions have truth to them, not scientific in nature, but in the consequences of how it guides us as people. Buddhism may seem like it is a no nonsense form of religion, but it has a lot of nonsense in it to be honest. Christianity is no more or less nonsense. I think that the similarity in the religions is where the truth lies, all the definitions and beliefs and conceptualisations are different, but these are just external to the truth.

An interesting point is that I think Buddhism is very difficult for a large majority of people to access, because of peoples levels of intelligence or motivation. In contrast, Christianity requires a faith in God, and this faith pulls you through thick and thin, no intelligence or motivation required, only a willingness to let Him in.

hey indie! i’m fairly sure vivikananda is german. generally i found buddhism to be a germanisation/uber-organisation of hinduism. all the 8 fold path, 4 noble truths, i often found myself wanting to cry out “and a partridge in a pear tree’! i enjoyed reading through your insights. i’ll email you with what i wrote after my experiences there. oh & the german girl who was there for 14 months, she had to leave because she slipped a disk in her back. she was/is a doctor & was a very committed meditator. she lead the metta chanting every night & had the voice of an angel! it was good to ‘talk’ to you yesterday…enjoy pokhara! jennifer x

i like the way you have told this story – the alternations between external and internal experience are a great way to hold a reader’s interest – but some of your paragraphs are gargantuan! (the photos make up for it, easily)

i take great pleasure in reading about your open-minded and rational enquiries about these things – this is the way to really understand, i think – listen, question, learn, experiment, contemplate – brilliant!

most of what you say about the mind fits with my own experiences of meditation, except for one detail in the interpretation – true, the inner voice is not the self – but neither is the ‘watcher’

the self is not a part of us, it is the whole of us (including what appears to be the outside world, since that is also constructed in the mind) – the self can be experienced as a complete and simple thing in meditation, when the watcher, the watching and the watched merge – like it says in the upanishads

i have to say though, that fascinating though that state of mind (i mean samadhi) may be, i’ve found it to be more or less useless – contemplation (dhyana) on the other hand is a priceless tool – the leatherman of the mind!

It’s good to read about some meditation practice and I love your comment about how when we are children trying to sleep we watch in wonder at the mind. It’s amazing how we loose this faculty as we age. And since leaving india, I’ve lost a lot of my meditation practice. It’s great to read these stories, it reminds me of india, and gives me motivation to remember my being. It’s so easy to get caught up in things. the receptionist was taking to me very cheaply without adressing properly just because I am Indian.

“our prices are in Euro’s n resort is not for you indian was what she was saying.

thought i was willing to pay what ever the f.k..g price they had.

I have been looking at the photographs after enlarging them, they are good so much colour and vibrancy. The one where Sasha is on the wall there is a ‘CAR SHOPPE’ in the backgroundwhich I thought was funny.
The one with the Temple is awesome when you enlarge it, there is a path zig zaging down with flags marking the route, the path continues to the edge of the river, you would have to be extremely fit to go up and down every day.
The walnut seller appears to be asleep, there is a map behind him that has images of people skiing at three places, one area was the Pindari Glacier, I will have a look on Google Earth to see where that is.
Overall they are brilliant photographs up to yuor usual high standard.

that decked-up baba is definitely a fraud.. I saw him posing for a television company once, all cocky and stuck up about it..they probably handed him a nice wad of crisp 100 rupee-bills as well..so much for asceticism..

Your pictures never fail to amaze me. beautiful. You definately seem to be living the life you love and loving the life you live. Its definatly the way forward. I’m pretty buzzing at the mo. Have recently done 2 weeks of earth activist training which is a permaculture design course and then went to climat camp….both of which were amazing. We’re doing another TAA soon and I reckon ive met someone who is all the things I could wish for in a friend, lover, partner and play mate. How exciting. Will tell you more as it unfolds. Not to mention all the wars of independence in South America, Asia and Africa…

Nice big walloping story, me and emma have just gone through it together. Cool tea fields, what was the smell like? Tetley or PG?

I think the aubergine bath is mint, didn’t know they were yella when unripened.

Hey what a top story.

How long did we spend playing these games! they seem so dimensional when i was kid. I think my imagination was much better then.

I remember playing some of these games with no real idea what was going one, like glider rider, but i wasn’t to bothered.. as long as i got a go on the GLIDER! weeee.

The Spectrum days were great times, i think i prefer them to the Amiga era. Remember Blood n Guts? eww nasty game.

This must go on everywhere there is conflict, in our eyes it is not right, but in the eyes of the parents it is the path of the righteous. It does not matter which side you are on. Parents are brainwashing their children to accept the horrors of war, to accept the horror of causing the death of another person. Better to prepare for it than to have mental breakdowns caused by seeing widescale death. Very scary, you are right, it is evolution in action.

My stray thought was I wonder what the rice I have just eaten will turn into in my stomach whilst i sleep, is it harder for your body to mulch things up when you are horizontal? Weird…. I have changed my mind about the submarine, after a while it could send you crazy being confined in a small space. talking of which there was a man who lived all alone for three months after which time he became deranged so he switched off the light, locked the door behind him and was never seen again. Trouble was that his actions resulted in 93 people dying. now that is a puzzler, a bit like the Gaza business, the iron fist rules but what happens when the fist becomes a cotton glove.

The track from yellow submarine was “Sea of Monsters” totally instrumental. For some time now I have been encouraging all my stray thoughts, letting my mind play like a child. If im on the internet I often find hours disappearing whilst I read about things like the oldest tree in the world, to the history of world banking, to the latest news in the computer game world.

And John, don’t give up! Keep this page in mind if you can, and write down anything that comes along! A lot of mind time for me lately has been taken up with the Israel/Gaza polava, any thoughts on that hunk of meat?

all I can think now is ‘what am I thinking about’, stray thoughts are those that come into your mind in the dead of night when you are trying to get back to sleep. too busy during the day to have stray thoughts, those thoughts are motivated by by visual or mental happenings. You do not say which track from yellow submarine, I like the title track, all my friends aboard surrounded by a yellow submarine sailing in a green sea below a blue sky protected from the mad and crazy world around us. Sounds like paradise.

I was just listening to my whole Beatles collection on random and a track from yellow submarine came in, I was kinda disappointed as I feel that a lot of songs from movies (of course i’m not saying all!) are so geared towards conducting the emotion of a movie, that they fail to stir up anything thought provoking and fun in my mind than other songs.

Ive read people are moaning about this and how bad it is blah blah.. Funny though i was at the bus stop last week, and a big banner saying “JESUS SAVES” was plastered across the side of a Stagecoach. No one will complain about that though, as its invisible to most people.

I think this advert offends people because it confirms something perhaps we all think about sometimes (Even the Archbishop of Canterbury i’d guess.), but are to scared to contemplate.

No doubt when the bus hits the streets some people will be unhappy and objections will be raised, the media will front page it so even more people will be up in arms, which is exactly the point of the advert.

It will be good for some people as it will help them to forget for a moment all the other worries.

Hi Indie,

The reason they build retail parks in Arab areas is to monopolise the Arab economy. You should see Nazareth, an Arab city to which Arabs were allowed to flee for safety when their villages were being burned and razed in 1946-48. Now it’s got a huge Jewish settlement, Nazaret Illit (Higher Nazareth) on the hills above it, full of hypermarkets etc. so that now even Arab petrol stations in the old city can’t do business. All that’s left of the ancient bazaar is a few jewellery and craft shops.
